The ALEX project was set up by Sex Workers, for Sex Workers. We can provide a variety of services both in person and online (see below), with your first point of contact being those who have lived experience of the industry themselves.
The Alex project is made up of a team of SWers. We understand the complexities that come with being a SWer and we are here to offer any support you may need.
We are running weekly drop-ins across the Alex Project boroughs- Richmond, Wandsworth, Lewisham, Southwark, and Lambeth where we can offer supplies, signposting, or even just a chat.
We also run online wellbeing and topic sessions which happen fortnightly. Wellbeing sessions focus on self-care practices such as breathwork and art. Topic sessions cover a wide basis of issues we may face, such as work-life balance and safety.
We are always open to feedback from our SWer community so please feel free to give us your own ideas for our topic or wellbeing sessions.
Our counselling service is here to support people who may be struggling with their mental health and wellbeing. Counselling is where you work with a trained therapist to explore your emotions and feelings in a private and confidential space.
You may wish to use the time to talk about current difficulties or experiences from the past. Sometimes therapists may support you through finding other creative ways to explore your feelings, such as through art and movement.
Therapists are unlikely to give advice or provide direct advocacy (unlike our other services), but can help you to think about your situation, and to process your feelings. At the ALEX project, you would be committing to attending weekly sessions (50 minutes each) with a therapist for 12 weeks, either in-person or online.
We also run a number of therapy groups across the year, using creative modalities (e.g. Dance/movement, art) as a way to help people connect with each other and express themselves. Group therapy is also run by a trained therapist, who supports group members to process their feelings and experiences with the support of one another.
Casework – also called advocacy – is where you have an initial assessment with someone from the ALEX team and make an agreement with them about how they will help you to achieve your goals.
We will only do what you ask us to do and will work alongside you to explore your options and contribute to actions that you prioritise.
Casework is confidential and practical support, around a variety of issues. The caseworker will need to ask you for some personal details, as we have a duty of care towards you.
This kind of support can be useful for:
Getting you registered with and referring you to other services
Supporting applications for housing or benefits
Assistance when you have difficult tasks to do
Accompanying you to appointments
Making action plans and having regular check-ins with you
If there is a legal issue you need support with, we can't provide legal advice, but we can connect you to resources - including trustworthy lawyers who are allies. Our casework would provide you with ongoing support through this process.
Peer support can be emotional, practical, or knowledge-based support from someone who has the same lived experience as you. The ALEX team is made up of current and former SWers. So you know the person you're speaking to understands the unique challenges faced within the industry and is supporting you with respect and understanding.
Whether housing, benefits, wellbeing, sexual health, DV or substance issues - we offer support on a wide range of topics, big and small, so just reach out! You can have peer support conversations with the ALEX team during outreach sessions, or by phone or email, without giving us any personal details.
